Gallery 2024

I started my new art journey in September 2024. I did a 6 week course as an introduction to different mediums before starting my first term of formal fine art classes.

Hand. September 2024 graphite drawing.  Started with pencil drawing and  learnt about using simple grids.

Hair. October 2024 Charcoal drawing. I found charcoal messy and it got everywhere, I  did not like this as a medium.

Later discovered charcoal also comes wrapped in silver foil or in pencils which makes it a whole lot easier to use.

Beach. October 2024 mixed media water colour and soft pastel.  First time using mixed media and the concept of the underpainting. I really liked this, and found it exciting and wanted to explore further.

2 gold rings. October 2024 with white chalk pencil and Gold leaf. First encounter with gold leaf, its really difficult to apply. This was to become something I would continue to struggle with again and again until I discovered liquid gold metallic leaf acrylic which is almost as good.

Autumn colours. November 2024 Watery Acrylic and soft pastel. Using autumn leaves to obscure a face and create a different composition. This was a real rush done in about 45 minutes in the class. Not reworked subsequently, but included as part of my journey. Will revisit this concept.

Flowers. November 2024. Acrylic background and pastels. A poor rushed picture, but I found this really interesting as we painted on the cardboard back of an old sketchpad. We prepared the surface area using  gesso and rough Polyfilla mixed together so the pastels would cling to it. Did a graduated colour background, meant to be a subtle blend of colour and not so much like Neapolitan ice cream tub. Met burnt sienna and yellow ochre.
